Grounding the Green New Deal: A Summit on Design, Policy, and Advocacy

There is an essential role for the built environment disciplines in addressing the climate crisis. Through 2 keynote presentations and 3 panel discussions with leading changemakers, the Grounding the Green New Deal Summit examined the intersection of policy, design, and advocacy to identify ways to accelerate action. The summit was held on April 9, 2022 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.

The summit can be viewed in its entirety or the two main portions can be watched to earn LA CES Continuing Education Credits upon successful completion of a short quiz.

Part 1: Advocacy

Continuing Education Credits

The Advocacy portion of the summit is approved for 2.0 Professional Development Hour (PDH) through the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System (LA CES) and meets the health, safety and welfare requirements (HSW).

Learning Objectives

• Understand the role that built environment disciplines can play in translating the goals of the Green New Deal — decarbonization, jobs, and justice — into on-the-ground practices and built works.
• Assess how advocacy can be effectively used to shape policy and inform built environment investments and design at multiple scales to address climate change.
• Trace the upstream forces that set the stage for climate projects and how designers can take an active role in the process from policymakers, agencies, and funders.
• Explore the intersection of policy, design, and advocacy to identify ways to accelerate individual and collective actions to effect change.
