LAF Honor Scholarship in Memory of Joe Lalli, FASLA

Award: One $20,000 winner, one $10,000 first runner-up, one $5,000 second runner-up

This LAF Honor Scholarship was established in memory of Joseph J. Lalli, FASLA (1943-2014) and his 46-year career as a landscape architect, artist, philanthropist, mentor, and teacher. Joe was the chairman and former president of the firm EDSA and had more than 500 projects to his credit in 40 countries. He was a persuasive leader, well-known and admired for his modesty and generosity. Joe experienced great value in his master’s degree and wanted to help make the opportunity for graduate education accessible to others.

Eligible applicants are landscape architecture students currently enrolled in an LAAB- or LAAC-accredited master’s degree program (post-baccalaureate or non-baccalaureate) at a university in the U.S. or Canada. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4-point scale.) Applicants should show commitment to some of the areas that Joe Lalli dedicated himself to, including drawing, artistic pursuits, the importance of travel, and giving back in service to one’s community and profession.

Candidates will be evaluated based on their demonstrated design ability, leadership, character/integrity, and service to others and to the landscape architecture profession. Financial need will also be considered.

Application Contents

All LAF scholarships and fellowships require applicants to submit the following materials:

  • General Submission Form
    Complete this online form with basic contact information and details about your degree program.
  • Photo
    Provide a color headshot in jpg format that is at least 1800x1200 pixels. It should be horizontally-oriented, well-lit with a simple background, and include your entire head and shoulders. LAF retains the right to use any submitted photo on our website and in other materials promoting LAF’s scholarship programs.
  • Bio for the LAF Website (150 word max)
    Provide a short bio in PDF, Microsoft Word, or TXT format. In 150 words or less, describe your background, current educational pursuits, future plans, and any other personal interests or activities.
  • Resume (2 page max)
    Upload your resume or CV in PDF format. It should include your education, professional experience, extra-curricular activities, and honors and awards. Please include Applicant Name/Resume/Scholarship Name and page number on each page.

In addition, this scholarship requires the following:

  • Financial Aid Form
    Complete this online form with information about your financial needs and any financial assistance you currently receive.
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
    Provide the e-mail address for each recommender and instructions will be sent to them. The letters should specifically address the candidate’s exemplary qualities and provide an example of a situation in which the candidate demonstrated character and integrity.
  • Essay (2 page max)
    Upload your original essay in PDF format. In 500 words or less, describe why you feel that graduate study is of benefit and will help you carry on some of the areas that Joe Lalli extended himself to including drawing, artistic pursuits, the importance of travel, giving back in service to one’s community and profession. The essay should be no more than two pages with margins of at least 1”, 10-point or larger font, and no images or graphics. Please include Applicant Name/Essay/Scholarship Name and page number on each page.
  • Work Samples (6 page max)
    Upload work samples for 3-6 projects from academic or internship work in one 8.5”x11” PDF document. Each should include explanatory text describing the project. If it was a group project, state this and describe your role. Please include Applicant Name/Work Samples/Scholarship Name and page number on each page.
