Announcing the 2017 LAF Medal and Founders Award Recipients

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) is delighted to announce the recipients of its 2017 LAF Medal and Founders’ Awards. Launched last year in conjunction with the foundation’s 50th anniversary, these two annual awards honor individuals and firms/organizations that have made a significant and sustained contribution to the LAF mission of supporting the preservation, improvement and enhancement of the environment.

The LAF Medal is conveyed to a landscape architect for distinguished work over a career in applying the principles of sustainability to landscapes. The 2017 LAF Medal goes to Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, OC, MBCSCLA, FCSCLA, FASLA.

“Cornelia Hahn Oberlander once said, ‘I dream of green cities and green buildings where rural and urban activities live in harmony.’ With a career spanning a stunning seventy years, she has created just that,” said Awards Committee Chair Dennis Carmichael, FASLA.

LAF Founders’ Award

The LAF Founders’ Award is conveyed to a firm, agency, or organization that demonstrates a significant commitment to preserving, creating, or enhancing landscapes over a sustained period of time. The 2017 LAF Founders’ Award goes to the U.S. National Park Service.

nps-shaded-logo-226w“In no small way are landscape architects and their organizations, including the Landscape Architecture Foundation,  indebted  to the National Park Service for its leadership, ethics, and works of landscape architecture,” said Carmichael on behalf of the Awards Committee.

The LAF Board Emeritus Council manages the nomination and selection process for the awards. Members of the 2017 Award Committee were:

  • Chip Crawford, FASLA, Forum Studio
  • Chris Dimond, FASLA, AICP, PWP Landscape Architecture
  • Richard Hawks, FASLA, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

  • Ginger Murphy, ASLA, U.S. Department of Agriculture

The recipients will be honored during LAF’s 2017 Awards Dinner on May 3 in Washington, D.C.

LAF's Barbara Deutsch Honored with Women in Sustainability Leadership Award

With great pride, the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) congratulates our Executive Director, Barbara Deutsch, FASLA, who has been recognized with one of Green Building & Design (gb&d)’s 2016 Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards. The awards celebrate the achievements of women who are making lasting change and strive to identify, support, and give opportunities to future women in leadership.

deutsch-headshotDeutsch is among 15 executives from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, who will be honored at the third annual awards, presented on Oct 4 in Los Angeles on the eve of the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.

“I am so honored to be part of this group of such amazing and influential women who are moving the needle on sustainability from a wide range of strategies,” said Deutsch.”I am thankful to the women and men who have inspired and mentored me throughout my life to help me achieve in many ways.”

“As more and more women move into positions of decision-making authority and leadership, we can do more to support and learn from each other. The WSLA is a great opportunity to connect, share our stories, and hopefully inspire others.”

gb&d magazine presents the third annual Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards in partnership with the United States Green Building Council with support from the MetroFlor Corporation, Steelcase, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and United Airlines. The winners were chosen by a judging panel that includes Rochelle Routman of MetroFlor, Kimberly Lewis of the USBGC, Amanda Sturgeon of the International Living Future Institute, Angela Foster-Rice of United Airlines, Leith Sharp of Harvard University, and Chris Howe and Laura Heidenreich of Green Building & Design.

Award Recipients Honored at LAF’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Dinner

On June 10 at LAF’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Dinner at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia, LAF recognized first recipients of its new LAF Medal and Founders’ Awards. With Independence Mall as the backdrop, Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, Chair of the 2016 Award Committee presented the two awards before the crowd of 450 LAF friends and supporters.

Grant Jones, FASLA, co-founder of Jones & Jones Architecture and Landscape Architecture, took the stage to receive the first LAF Medal, which is conveyed to a landscape architect for distinguished work over a career in applying the principles of sustainability to landscapes. As the keynote speaker at the dinner, Grant delivered an inspiring speech full of history, wisdom, hope, and charges for the future.

“The Earth is our client, our partner in a life relationship. The landscape is not a fuzzy, vague or indefinable thing; it’s as real as your mother and father, and it’s got to be everything to you.”

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) received the first LAF Founders’ Award, which is conveyed to a firm, agency, or organization that demonstrates a significant commitment to preserving, creating, or enhancing landscapes over a sustained period of time. ASLA Executive Vice President and CEO Nancy Somerville accepted the award and then turned the tables, issuing a Philadelphia-style proclamation from the ASLA Board of Trustees expressing its sincerest appreciation to the Landscape Architecture Foundation in celebration of its 50 years.

LAF was so honored to recognize these innovators that have made a significant and sustained contribution to the LAF mission of supporting the preservation, improvement and enhancement of the environment.

The LAF Medal is conveyed to a landscape architect for distinguished work over a career in applying the principles of sustainability to landscapes. The first LAF Medal goes to Grant Jones, FASLA, co-founder of Jones & Jones Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

“Grant Jones has a depth and breadth of work focusing on natural systems. He was a real innovator of the 1980s and 1990s in many areas, from how site analysis informs planning to completely reinventing what it means to be a zoo,” said Awards Committee Chair Dennis Carmichael, FASLA. “His work, writings, poetry, and advocacy created the transformative change LAF seeks to make in the profession.”

The LAF Founders’ Award is conveyed to a firm, agency, or organization that demonstrates a significant commitment to preserving, creating, or enhancing landscapes over a sustained period of time. The first LAF Founders’ Award goes to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).asla-4line-300w2

“ASLA is the first organization in the world to promote the practice and ethics of landscape architecture as a profession. ASLA serves as the premier advocacy and educational forum for landscape architects,” said Carmichael on behalf of the Awards Committee.
