Andrea Hansen is the Head of Product at Stae, a startup that provides cities with tools to monitor and track trends in the urban environment by compiling data from sensors, smart devices, and apps such as Uber and AirBnB. She is also the Founding Principal of Fluxscape, which focuses on data visualization, mapping, and web applications for community and urban projects. Outside her professional practice, Andrea is the editor of Visualizing Systems, an online catalog that investigates how we map data to understand complex networks. Andrea was selected as a Code for America Fellow in 2014, where she worked on innovative web-based mapping and infrastructure projects with the City of Atlanta. In 2012 she was named to Next City’s Vanguard class, a “40 under 40” selection of young leaders working on urban issues.
Andrea teaches and lectures widely, most recently in the Sustainable Urban Environments program at Northeastern University in Boston. Previous appointments include Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (2010-2015), where she served as the inaugural Daniel Urban Kiley Fellow, and Marie Bickham Visiting Chair in Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University (2013-2014). Her publications include Composite Landscapes (with Charles Waldheim), which won the 2015 ASLA Honor Award for Communications, and Designing Places for People and the Environment (with Kalvin Platt).
