XTreme LA: Kalamazoo

Twenty four emerging design leaders from firms around the country will assemble in Kalamazoo, Michigan on September 11-13, 2007, to develop plans and designs for a real-world urban revitalization project.

Sponsored by Landscape Forms in partnership with LAF, the intense, three-day charrette will develop a master plan for the city of Kalamazoo. The goal is to create themes and initiatives that leverage underused and poorly-connected resources to create a downtown experience that attracts people, supports Michigan’s Cool Cities Program and makes Kalamazoo a better place to live, work, learn and play.

Kalamazoo Mayor Hannah McKinney will welcome the teams to the city and LAF Co-Hosts Susan Everett, FASLA, LAF Executive Director and Frederick Steiner, FASLA, Dean, School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin, and LAF Director and Vice President will provide an introduction to the event.

Participants will be divided into three teams of equal size, each led by renowned landscape architects and urban designers with extensive experience in urban revitalization projects worldwide. The team leaders are Thomas Balsley, FASLA, Principal, Thomas Balsley Associates; Chip Crawford, FASLA, Director of The Planning Group at HOK; and Barbara Faga, FASLA, Chairman of the Board of EDAW.

Team presentations will take place on the final day and a record of the results will be made available to the participants and posted on the LAF website.
